Religions The two major religions during the Renaissance were Catholic and Protestant. King/Queen dictated the “official” religion. The schools were only teach the “official” religion. If you didn’t practice this religion you be imprisoned, tortured, or killed. King Henry, Mary and Elizabeth’s father, was a Catholic until the church would not allow him to get a divorce. He then proceeded to become a protestant who allowed him his divorce. This is why Elizabeth and Mary have different religions.

Roman Catholic vs. Protestant Roman Catholic 1.Mass done in Latin 2.Believed priests were a link between God and people 3.Priests would devote life to God and were unmarried and wore elaborate robes. 4.You would give gifts to priests for them to forgive your sins. Protestant 1.Masses were in the language of the people. 2.Believed that you could find God w/o a priest or pope. 3.Priests were ordinary people who lead normal lives and wore ordinary robes. 4.Believed only God could forgive sins

Queen Mary and Religion Queen “Bloody” Mary ruled from 1553- 1558 and was a strong Catholic. She burned Protestants alive. During her rein over 300 people were burned at the stake. Her goal was to return England to the Roman Catholic church. Queen Elizabeth and Religion Queen Elizabeth I ruled from 1558 until 1603 and was a protestant. Even though she was a protestant she believed in religious toleration and lets Catholics practice. She was raised a committed protestant but practiced the Catholic faith during Queen Mary’s rein.
