7 Born on the 27 th of June in 1846, into a family of Anglo-Irish Protestant landowners. In 1875, Parnell was elected to the House of Commons in the “Home Rule.”

8 As an Irish political leader, Parnell influences many characters’ decisions in the novel. His determination for freedom from the British seemed to promise Ireland freedom. However, when the details of his affair is revealed, he fell from the grace of many. His fervent exhaustion to regain his previous position resulted in his death.

10 In 1879, Michael Davitt founded the Land League, and appointed Parnell the head. In 1882, the Phoenix Park Murders, in which British officials were murdered, were blamed on Parnell by his enemies. Although he was constantly under attack, he continued to work for the Irish Party.
