4 Sea Water  Approx.. 3.5% salt and 96% water.  Table salt is most common salt present  Salinity of surface water varies with latitude and topographical features of the earth.  Evaporation, precipitation, freezing, thawing, and fresh water run off.

5 Salinity!  Parts of ocean that are close to river mouths (Freshwater). Low salinity  Water in subtropical areas where evaporation is high and precipitation is low have high surface salinities.  When water evaporates it leaves behind salt causing higher salinity. Salinity is the measure of concentration of dissolved inorganic salts in the water For short: The ratio of water to salt.

6 Salinity Continued.  Near the equator where rain falls heavy, surface water has lower salinity.  30 degrees north and south of the equator have a pattern of evaporation exceeding precipitation.  These areas have higher salinity!

7 Importance of Salt!  The minerals in the seawater are important to marine organisms.  Even small amounts are concentrated in an organism’s tissues.
