SAVING THE WORLD Tyler Earl-Capehart, Sam Jacek, Sarah Masinda

Global Warming Global warming is caused primarily by carbon dioxide from burning coal, oil and gas. Certain gases that trap heat are building up in Earth's atmosphere. The primary culprit is carbon dioxide, released from burning coal, oil and natural gas in power plants, cars, factories, etc. (and to a lesser extent when forests are cleared). The second is methane, released from rice paddies, both ends of cows, rotting garbage in landfills, mining operations, and gas pipelines. * Carbon dioxide

Carbon dioxide

Octane Word Equation: 2 molecules of C8H18 plus twenty-five molecules of O2 reverts into eighteen molecules of Water and sixteen molecules of Carbon Dioxide. Balanced Chemical: 2C8H18 + 25O2--> 18H2O + 16CO2 Production: Produces about sixteen molecules of CO2

Octane cont. State of matter: At room temperature Octane is a liquid. How we calculated the cost per mol: 1,000,000/$ 50= 20,000 barrels Each barrel has 8 moles/barrel. 20,000/8= 2,500 mols/$1,000,00 Very Cheap

Methanol Word Equation: 2 mols of 2CH 3 OH and 3 mols of O 2 produce 2 mols of CO 2 and 4 mols of H 2 O Balanced Equation: 2CH 3 OH+3O 2----> 2CO 2 + 4H 2 O Production: Produces 2mols CO2 Energy Production: 2 mols of Methanol to produce 1 unit of energy

Methanol cont. State of matter: At room temp. Methanol is at the gas state How we calculated the cost per mol: 1,000,000/$ 202.5= 3,037.5 barrels Each barrel has 15 moles/barrel. 3037.5/15= 202.5 mols/$1,000,00

Ethanol Word Equation: Two molecules of CH 3 OH and three molecules of O 2 mixed with heat produces two molecules of CO 2 and four molecules of Water. Balanced Equation: 2CH 3 OH+3O 2----> 2CO 2 + 4H 2 O Production:Produces more water than CO2 Creates using Co2

Ethanol cont. State of matter: At room temp. Ethanol is also at the gas state How we calculated the cost per mol: 1,000,000/$ 27=37,037.037 barrels Each barrel has 459 moles/barrel. 37,037.037/459=80.69 mols/$1,000,00

Cost Analysis and Justification Ethanol: most expensive 80.69 mol/1,000,000 Methanol: middle 202.5 mol/1,000,000 Octane: Cheapest 2,500 mol/1,000,000

Each has it's own effect on the enviroment Octane produces most CO2: 16*8=128 molecules Ethanol:27*2=54 molecules Methanol:15*2=30 molecules

How Industries/world Change Octane Cheap to produce industries would take advantage Produces way more CO2 Methanol More expensive than Octane, but less expensive then Ethanol. Most Green Reduces the amount of CO2 Ethanol Most expensive to produce Requires a lot of land to make Uses a lot of corn, so food demand would increase Would need to change the way cars run

OUR SOLUTION *EPIC THEME* Our company decided to keep both the earth and the consumer in mind when choosing METHANOL The cost is in the middle of the other choses Produces less CO2 than Octane and produces about the same as Ethanol
