End Show 35-2 The Nervous System Slide 1 of 38 Copyright Pearson Prentice Hall The Synapse Synapse

End Show 35-2 The Nervous System Slide 2 of 38 Copyright Pearson Prentice Hall The Synapse The synaptic cleft separates the axon terminal from the dendrites of the adjacent cell. Synaptic cleft

End Show 35-2 The Nervous System Slide 3 of 38 Copyright Pearson Prentice Hall The Synapse As an impulse reaches a terminal, vesicles send neurotransmitters into the synaptic cleft. These diffuse across the cleft and attach to membrane receptors on the next cell. Receptor Ca +

End Show 35-2 The Nervous System Slide 4 of 38 Copyright Pearson Prentice Hall The Synapse Sodium ions then rush across the membrane, stimulating the next cell. If the stimulation exceeds the cell’s threshold, a new impulse begins.

End Show 35-2 The Nervous System Slide 5 of 38 Copyright Pearson Prentice Hall Let’s try it!!! Dendrites – whisper in ear of cell body Cell body – Raise arms to start action potential Axon – Carry action potential by raising arms it’s the ACTION Potential WAVE!! Pre-Synapse Terminal – make neurotransmitter and toss to next dendrite!

End Show 35-2 The Nervous System Slide 11 of 38 Copyright Pearson Prentice Hall Blood pressure, heart rate, breathing, and swallowing are controlled in the brain stem.

End Show 35-2 The Nervous System Slide 12 of 38 Copyright Pearson Prentice Hall The Brain Thalamus Hypothalamus The thalamus receives messages from all sensory receptors throughout the body and relays the information to the proper region of the cerebrum for further processing. The hypothalamus controls recognition and analysis of hunger, thirst, fatigue, anger, and body temperature. It controls coordination of the nervous and endocrine systems.
