Guided Notes #4 Subscripts
2
Update on who’s your teacher I am so sorry my Chemistry students, I do not have a date on when you will be back in my room. Mr. Marcolongo is still sick. I know this stuff is hard to understand- please try. Life will give you many trials and this learning curve is just a tiny blip in your experiences. Ms. Gaines seem to disappear- either her license expired or she was not qualified to take a long term position, which is why she is not coming back. I am working with administration to get another long term substitute. Sorry It is a stinky situation for all of us.

Grading: Please keep your 3-ring binders organized as that will be the MAJORITY of your GRADE You will still have quizzes and the test will probably be next Thursday (Feb. 12 th )- it will be curved based off the of the highest score in EACH CLASS

Before the notes begin…let’s get organized (#s on your worksheets) 1- warm up 01/20 -01/239- Guided Notes- Bonding #2 2- Video Quiz- bonding10- Lewis Dot Diagrams (Ionic Bonding) 3- Periodic Table Basics11- Worksheet #3- Drawing Ionic Bonds 4- Guided Notes- Bonding #112- Video- “Forensic Detectives” 5- Valence Electrons w/Lewis Dot Structures 13- warm up 02/02-02/06 6- warm up 01/26-01/3014- Guided Notes #3- Properties of Ionic Compounds 7- Ions, Oxidation #, Ion Symbol15- Guided Notes #4- Bonding (today’s) 8- Ions through Bohr Diagrams16- (tomorrow’s- Guided Notes #4a)

Blue Text The stuff in Blue is my attempt to teach you guys from afar. Stuff I would have said to help in your learning. Please feel free to write down the Blue text to assist in your understanding of the notes.

What are ionic compounds? Ionic Compounds: Valence Electrons are __transferred__ __Metals give __ valence electrons to nonmetals.
7
What are ionic compounds continued… (+) ions are called __cations__ Cations are metals that __ GIVE__ their valence electrons away (-) ions are called __anions__ Anions are nonmetals that __TAKE__ valence electrons to get a full valence shell of 8
8
Remember a few weeks ago? Groups 1, 2, and 13= cation= GIVE away their valence electrons example- Na= Group 1= 1 VE (valence electron) GIVES away Na 1+ or written as Na + Groups 15, 16, and 17= anion= TAKE valence electrons example- O= Group 16= needs to TAKE 2 (valence electrons) VE O 2-
9
What is the charge on an ionic compound? Resulting Ionic Compounds are __neutral 0__ charge Number of __+__ = Number of __ -__ Example Na 2 O You have 2 Na atoms (two sodium atoms) You have 1 O atom (one oxygen atom) Na comes from Group 1 and only has 1 VE to GIVE away O needs to TAKE 2 VE (valence electrons)
10
What is a chemical formula? Formulas: shows the ratio of atoms Example: Na 2 O 2 is the Subscript- the __#__ of each atom in a chemical formula (You have 2 sodium atoms and 1 oxygen atom)
11
How do you determine the formula for ionic compounds? __Crossdown__ method of determining formula Oxidation numbers become __subscript__ of opposite ions Na + O 2- Na comes from Group 1 and only has 1 VE to GIVE away O needs to TAKE 2 VE (valence electrons)
12
How do you name ionic compounds? Formula names Positive ion is __cation__ (metal) Negative ion is __anion__ (nonmetal) Add __ -ide__ to the end of the nonmetal ion (a suffix) Example: NaCl is now called __Sodium Chloride__ NOT sodium chlorine
