Write these notes in your journal… COMPOUND SENTENCES = 2 simple sentences joined together by a comma and a conjunction or a semicolon (;) Ex: She likes to go to the movies, and her favorite movie is Twilight. She likes to go to the movies; her favorite movie is Twilight. COORDINATING CONJUNCTIONS: Found in the MIDDLE of Compound Sentences. Determine if the following sentences are simple or compound. Write SIMPLE or COMPOUND in your journal. It was pouring rain; getting a cab was impossible. Miguel patched and cleaned the sails of the boat. The magazine was both timely and readable. Ted read the instructions, and then he built the model. Computers and printers are standard equipment in most classrooms. Leo took the flag down, and Rosa folded it. The train came in early, but I was already at the station. The wind started blowing in the morning and kept on until late in the day. The storm forced waste water into the lake, so swimming is prohibited. SENTENCES: Compound/Complex
SIMPLE: 1 SUBJECT + 1 PREDICATE Ex: Marcos and John eat ice cream every day. COMPOUND: 1 Independent Clause (Subject & Predicate)+ 1 Independent Clause (Subject & Predicate) MUST USE EITHER A SEMI-COLON (;) Or a COMMA and COORDINATING CONJUNCTION (For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So) IN THE MIDDLE Ex: Marcos and John love to eat ice cream, so they usually go to Baskin Robbins. COMPLEX: 1 Independent Clause (Subject & Predicate) + 1 Dependent Clause (Fragment) Use a subordinating conjunction (because, while, if, until, after, since, etc….) Ex: While Marcos and John love going to Baskin Robbins, they dream of one day going to U-Swirl. They had never heard of such a place, until their good friend told them they had many toppings to compliment their vanilla ice cream choice. Because of all the toppings, Marcos and John will be sure to visit soon!

Identify the type of sentence. Write S (Simple), CD (Compound) or CX (Complex) It was pouring rain; getting a cab was impossible. The magazine was both timely and readable. Because the rain was so heavy, we made sure to bring an umbrella. The train came in early, but I was already at the station. The picnic begins at noon; the clouds should be gone by then. Although the competition was rough, the Sharks won the game. We had to leave the party because the room was so crowded. Ted read the instructions, and then he built the model. I finished my homework early and went outside to play. After it rained, my plant grew another 3 inches! CD S CX
