EURO EURO A High Intensity Neutrino Oscillation Facility in Europe History Aims Structure Some admin Rest of the meeting

History History EC funds science through Framework Programmes Particle physics became involved in FP6:  ESGARD (chair: Roy Aleksan) created by lab directors  Steer accelerator R&D proposals to FP6+n Most relevant FP6(+n) programme – RIs Support for existing infrastructure  Integrating Infrastructure Initiatives (CARE) Support for new infrastructure  Design Studies

History History Design studies:  There were to be 3 calls  ~9MEUR EC contribution/DS ECFA prioritised EUROTeV (Global TeV LC) for 1 st Independently, EURISOL submitted to 1 st call  European Isotope Separation On-Line Radioactive Ion Beam Facility  Includes baseline Beta Beam design Both successful ECFA (sort-of) prioritised NF for 2 nd call EC cancelled 2 nd and 3 rd calls

History History FP7  53BEUR budget  7 year duration, started 2007 Four programmes:  Cooperation – for priority areas: health, etc  Ideas – implemented by ERC, any science, emphasis on PIs  People – research mobility and career development  Capacities – knowledge capacities, e.g. RIs

Research Infrastructures Research Infrastructures 1.8BEUR Support for existing infrastructure  Integrating Activities (EuCARD) Support for new infrastructure  Design Studies  Construction of New Infrastructure – Preparatory Phase  Construction of New Infrastructure – Construction Phase 1 st DS call closing date: 2 nd May 2007; ~4MEUR Decision made to submit proposal, but…….

Strategy Group Strategy Group “…..studies of the scientific case for future neutrino facilities and the R&D into associated technologies are required to be in a position to define the optimal neutrino programme based on the information available in around 2012; Council will play an active role in promoting a coordinated European participation in a global neutrino programme” Crucial R&D for 2 nd generation facilities (post T2K) Include 3 main European candidates:  CERN to Frejus Super-Beam  Neutrino Factory  Beta-Beam Performance and “cost” comparison Present outcome to SG Done in collaboration, not competition

EURO (or EUROnu) EURO (or EUROnu) Created end 2006 15 partners, coordinator STFC Submitted proposal: May 07; Total cost 14.5M€, EC 4.8M€ Outcome: August 07 – ranked first, allocated 4.0M€ total cost 13.5M€ Project started: 1 st September 2008 Duration: 4 years – completion in 2012 Must satisfy EC requirements
