Properties of Matter
2
Matter is defined as anything that has mass AND takes up space.
3
Matter can be described by its properties. A property is a characteristic.
4
There are physical properties. (these don’t change when tested) And, there are chemical properties. (these “ruin” the sample when tested
5
Some examples of properties are color color flammability flammability odor odor reactivity reactivity state of matter state of matter acidity acidity conductivity conductivity malleability malleability
6
One important property of matter is what state of matter it is in.
7
The three states of matter that we will study are SOLIDLIQUIDGAS Def.Definite shape Definite volume No definite shape Definite volume No definite shape No definite volume Visual Model
8
NOW, LET’S COMPARE THEIR PROPERTIES! Solids: malleable, conductive, molecules vibrating, flammable, reactive, odor, appearance Liquids: conductive, molecules moving/ flowing, reactive, odor, appearance, acidity Gases: fast moving molecules, diffusing/ odor, reactive, flammable, appearance
