Living Things Having life Motion of nature 5 attributes: Light Air
Food Water Space Synonyms: Active Working Operative Living things…A living thing is something that has life and is a movement of nature. Living things must contain five attributes in order to be called living things: light, air, good, water, and space. Three synonyms for living are active, working, and operative. In this picture, you can see many living things such as: trees, birds, and grass.
6
Nonliving Things Non – not, reverse of Lacks the 5 attributes
Synonyms: Dead Lifeless Breathless Nonliving things…Non means not or the reverse of. If something does not contain the five attributes previously listed, then it is nonliving. A few synonyms of nonliving would be dead, lifeless, and breathless. By looking at the picture, one can see a few nonliving things: airplane, screwdriver, wrench, tack, car, pencil, paperclip, etc.

Similarities Living things = MRS NERG Movement Reproduction
Sensitivity Nutrition Excretion Response Growth Some apply to nonliving things Although living and nonliving things are very different, they have a few similarities. An acronym for living things is MRS NERG which represents movement, reproduction, sensitivity, nutrition, excretion, response, and growth. Some of these attributes apply also to nonliving things. For example, a car can move, it is sensitive to its sensors, it excretes exhaust, and it also responds to a driver. A computer is also sensitive to touch, and it also responds to buttons and clicks. A telephone in the same manner moves when ringing, is sensitive to touch, and it also responds to a call. On the other hand, a book or a pencil holder do not possess any of these qualities. Therefore, although a nonliving thing may possess some of these living qualities; unless it possesses them all, it remains nonliving.

Manmade vs. Natural Manmade - manufactured, created, or constructed by human beings Natural - being in concordance with or determined by nature Manmade ~ Nonliving Natural ~ Living Comparing something natural to something manmade is almost synonymous to comparing living to nonliving. Something that is manmade is manufactured, created, or constructed by a human being. On the other hand, something natural is something in concordance with or determined by nature. Although men take natural things and try to manipulate them into being manmade, they remain natural. So it is with living and nonliving things.
9
Quiz Now, let us take a quiz to see if you can distinguish between which pictures are living things and which are nonliving things. (I would then call on different people to answer each picture and tell why.)
