CLIC Permanent Magnet Quadrupole Engineering Development update Norbert Collomb, STFC Daresbury Laboratory 1N. Collomb 03/10/2011

CLIC Permanent Magnet Quadrupole Since last meeting 13/04/2011 much progress –CAD model complete –Analysis complete –Final tweaks complete –Detail drawings complete –Long lead time items have been quoted for –Purchase orders for long lead time items placed (will be today) –Request for quotes on manufactured items in progress –Bill of materials established and verified –Assembly area identified and reserved N. Collomb 03/10/2011 2

CLIC Permanent Magnet Quadrupole CAD Model (spot the difference) N. Collomb 03/10/2011 3 Previous (April 2011) model had details missing. Gearboxes identified and fitted Outer Limit switch added Optical Linear Encoders introduced Inner Limit switches added Analysis identified some mechanical improvements were required.

Next step (1): Manufacture Request quotes from manufacturers Discuss process if required and associated tolerances Agree price and lead times Discuss possibility of supplying part assemblies Expected manufacturing duration: 4 months N. Collomb 03/10/2011 4

Next step (2): Assembly Assemble manufactured components Analyse assembly process and identify automation processes Write assembly procedure (work in progress) Identify jigs and fixtures required for assembly process (work in progress) Expected assembly duration: 3 months N. Collomb 03/10/2011 5

Next step (3): Testing Identify required instruments and measurement equipment (manual and automated) Measure magnetic characteristics Measure mechanical tolerances Specify ‘Go and No-Go’ criteria Mark up any deviation for installation purposes Rework or adjust if required Establish test specification document Expected testing duration: 3 months N. Collomb 03/10/2011 6

CLIC PM Quadrupole summary I would like to stress that the prototype is to be treated completely different to the future mass production system This is a proof of principle study There will be some testing during assembly A post analysis will be carried out to identify opportunities for subsequent systems –Procedures and processes (automation) need to be established for mass production –Cost analysis for manufacture, assembly and testing as primary contributor needs to be carried out –Commissioning, Installation, Maintenance and operation costs can be estimated as secondary overall contributor Corrector features are still in preliminary design state CLIC Permanent Magnet Quadrupole prototype (strong family member) completion scheduled for March 2012 N. Collomb 03/10/2011 7
