Geography Controlled Assessment Lesson 2 – Identifying the aims of your controlled assessment

Learning Objectives: 1.State which hypothesis you are going to investigate 2.Decide on 3 enquiry questions that you will base your assessment around 3.Demonstrate your understanding of the aims of the controlled assessment

AIMS OF THIS CONTROLLED ASSESSMENT What makes an urban area environmentally sustainable? In what ways is the urban area of Leighton Buzzard environmentally sustainable? How could it be more environmentally sustainable?

What is a hypothesis?

A statement. You will carry out research to see if this statement if likely to be true or false. NB: You cannot prove or disprove a hypothesis – just show whether or not your evidence suggests it is true/false.

Choices of Hypothesis OPTION 1: Leighton Buzzard has the potential to become much more environmentally sustainable. OPTION 2: The urban area of Leighton Buzzard is not as environmentally sustainable as it could be.

Key Questions Your key questions will form the different sections of your results presentation and analysis. They should directly link back to your hypothesis, helping you to invesigate whether or not the hypothesis is true. You need 3.

Key questions 1 and 2 You need to write 2 questions about the aspects of sustainability that you will research. These questions should focus on judging how environmentally sustainable Leighton Buzzard is. POSSIBLE EXAMPLES: How sustainable is transport in Leighton Buzzard? Is Leighton Buzzard’s transport sustainable? Do people travel in a sustainable way in Leighton Buzzard? How sustainable is waste management in Leighton Buzzard? To what extent does Leighton Buzzard manage its waste effectively? How much, and what, does Leighton Buzzard recycle ? How energy efficient are homes in Leighton Buzzard? In what ways are homes energy efficient in Leighton Buzzard? Do Leighton Buzzard’s homes use energy sustainably? How polluted is Leighton Buzzard? What is the condition of Leighton Buzzard’s environment? In what ways is Leighton Buzzard’s environment polluted?

Key question 3 Your 3 rd key question should focus on the ways in which Leighton Buzzard can become a more environmentally sustainable urban place POSSIBLE EXAMPLES: How can Leighton Buzzard become more environmentally sustainable? In what ways Leighton Buzzard become a more environmentally sustainable urban area? What strategies can Leighton Buzzard use to become a more sustainable urban area? How can Leighton Buzzard make its “transport” and “waste management” more sustainable?

Get Writing… TASK - Use pages 4,5 and 6 of the Student Guide to start drafting your introduction. READ THE GUIDE CAREFULLY FOR HELP – IT CLEARLY TELLS YOU WHAT TO DO. As this is a “Low Control” task your teacher can give you some verbal answers.

Homework Gather 3 different maps showing the location of Leighton Buzzard (they should show the area around LB, not just the town itself). You are going to use these to help you draw a sketch map next lesson.
