World War I Origins World War I began in 1914 In 1915 the Lusitania was sunk by a German Submarine killing more than 100 Americans Causing the US to go from Neutrality to War.

World War I – Impacts at home The war created jobs in northeastern and Midwestern cities African- Americans began moving from the South to the North in the thousands. Impact at home Crime to communicate any information that would interfere with U.S military operations or aid its ememies. Eugene V. Debs( Socialist Party) was convicted of hindering military recruiting by making a speech against it. He received 10 years in prison.

Isolationism Before the US entered the war, Wilson gave a speech in which he described Fourteen Points he felt would avoid future wars. He also called for a league of nations that would work together to keep peace.

Communism and Socialism - Communism was based on a single-party government ruled by a dictatior. Communism grew out of socialism. -The fear of international communism was called the Red Scare because red was the color of the communist flag. - This fear lead to the pursuit of suspected communists and socialist.

Immigration Restrictions - The Red Scare led to new restrictions on immigration. -People born in America felt that they were superior to immigrants. - Conservative reaction againist immigrants resulted in the passage of legislation -that set limits on the number of immigrants that could come into the country.

Popular Culture -During the 1920’s radio and movies became apart of popular entertainment. -This attracted millions of loyal fans and helped create the first media stars. - During the 1920’s automobiles replaced horse’s.

Popular Culture - Lets give a big thanks to Henry Ford and his assembley line it made cars more affordable and made mass production possible. - Mass Production produced goods in a great volume.

Harlem Renaissance -During the 1920’s there was a wave of creativity flowing through Harlem that celebrated African American culture thought words and song. - Jazz music which became the theme music of the roaring 20’s was developed by African- Americans.

Harlem Renaissance -Langston Hughes best know writer and poet - Louis Armstrong sometimes called « Satchmo », became well known for playing the trumpet.

Tin Pan Alley While the Harlem Renaissance was occurring, another musical movement, Tin Pan Alley, was also on the rise in New York City. The name “Tin Pan Alley” refers to names and the group of music writers and publishers. One of the most famous was Irving Berlin, who wrote hundreds of songs during his career, including “God Bless America” and “White Christmas.”
