Definition: Reciprocal – Is the inverse of a number. For example, the reciprocal of is and the reciprocal of 2 is. The product of a number and its reciprocal is 1 (this property is called the multiplicative inverse). Zero is the only number without a reciprocal.

Example 1: Divide the following fractions. Cross reduce Original problem Multiply the numerators and denominators and rewrite as a mixed number. Final answer Rewrite as multiplication using the reciprocal of the divisor. Strategy: Rewrite the numbers as improper fractions, if necessary. Rewrite the problem with multiplication using the reciprocal of the divisor. Next, cross reduce (optional). Then multiply the numerators and denominators. Write your final answer as a mixed number in simplest form, if necessary. ÷ 2 Dividing Fractions by Fractions

Example 2: Divide the following whole number by the fraction. Multiply the numerators and denominators and write as a mixed number. Original problem Final answer Put the whole number (7) over 1. Strategy: * Put any whole numbers over 1 (if necessary) * Rewrite the problem with multiplication using the reciprocal of the divisor. * Next, cross reduce (optional). * Then multiply the numerators and denominators. * Write your final answer as a mixed number in simplest form, if necessary. Real-Life Application One day, Vinay decided to make sushi rolls. First, he laid down a sheet of seaweed, called nori, on the sushi rolling mat. Then, he used the mat to roll up rice, cucumber and avocado. Finally, he cut up the roll into smaller pieces. If Vinay had 2 cups of rice and used for each sushi roll, how many sushi rolls did he make?
