WHAT’S THE DEFINITION OF “HEIGHT” ? Height derives from the Old English word hehthu, meaning "top of something." Height is the measure of vertical distance, but has two meanings in common use. It can either indicate how "tall" something is, or how "high up" it is. For example, "The height of the building is 50 m" or "The height of the airplane is 10,000 m". When used to describe how high something like an airplane or mountain peak is from sea level, height is more often called altitude. Height is measured along the vertical (y) axis between a specified point and another.

HOW DO WE MEASURE HEIGHT? To measure your height, you measure the distance from the floor to the top of your head. On the other hand, the height of a mountain is its elevation above sea level (the height of Mt. Everest, for instance, is 8.848m). It’s more commonly measured in meters but in the imperial system it’s counted in feet and inches. Peak 8.848 m Sea 29.029ft

BY WHAT FACTORS IS HEIGHT DETERMINED? Height is determined by a combination of genetics and environmental factors. A child's height differs when they have extremely tall or short parents. Somebody’s height is usually the average height of their parents. Other factors include the genetic response to factors such as diet, exercise, environment etc. Humans grow faster as infants and toddlers, but then slow down, and then there is the growth spurt, at around 11–12 years for females, and 13–14 years for males, followed by a steady decline to zero. On average, female growth speed trails off to zero at about 15 or 16 years, whereas the male curve continues for approximately 3 more years, going to zero at about 18–20.

HOW IS HEIGHT AFFECTED BY ONE’S ENVIRONMENT? The effect of the environment on height is illustrated by studies performed by anthropologist Barry Bogi of Guatemala Mayan children living in the United States. In the early 70s, when Bogin first visited Guatemala, he observed that Mayan Indian men averaged only 1.57m in height and the women averaged 1.42m. Bogin took another series of measurements after the Guatemalan Civil War, during which up to a million Guatemalans had fled to the United States. He discovered that Maya refugees, who ranged from six to twelve years old, were significantly taller than their Guatemalan counterparts. By 2000, the American Maya were 10cm taller than the Guatemalan Maya of the same age, due to better nutrition and health care.

FUN FACTS! The tallest person who ever lived is Robert Wadlow (1918–1940). He was 2.72m tall!!!

Chandra Bahadur Dangi (1939–2015) was the shortest person who ever lived, being just 51.2 cm tall.

The people of the Dinaric Alps (South Slavs) are recorded as being the tallest in the world, with a male average height of 1.85m and a female average height of 1.71m.
