5. Could you use things in the picture to help you?

6. Remember: P.I. magazine is 10 inches tall.

7. Don’t overthink! What did the introduction just tell you? Now write that down and any other thoughts you have about how Daphne can estimate the teacher’s height.

8. How tall does the picture of the teacher measure on the page in your book? You will need a ruler or a piece of paper to measure. How tall does the P.I. magazine measure on the page in your book? Write down your answers.

9. How many times can the measurement of the height of the mystery teacher be divided by the measurement of the height of the P.I. magazine? Use a calculator or your cell phone to divide now. Write down your answer.

10. Did you get that the height of the mystery teacher is about seven times taller than the P.I. magazine?

11. 10 inches 70 inches total 10 inches How does that help you? Remember that the directions tell you that P.I. magazine is about 10 inches tall. 7 x 10 in. = The mystery teacher is 70 inches tall.

12. What is the same between a picture and real life? Now for part B. What is different between a picture and real life? -Aren’t the shapes of the people and things the same? -Aren’t the sizes of the people and things different?

13. In math class, saying something is “similar” is different than saying two students in class are “similar.” Take a moment and write down those thoughts in your own words. In math class, “similar” means: “same shape, different size.” Comparing “similar” students in class might mean that they act the same, like the same music or have the same style of clothing. So… unless the students are identical twins that are different sizes (which they are NOT), then “similar” means something different in math class: same shape, different size.

14. In class, we will use what you have read and written after watching this presentation to apply our new knowledge. Remember, you should be able to use items in a photograph to determine the height of someone in real life… If you’re still unsure how to do this, replay the presentation and write down a few questions to ask me in class.
