Acid Rain Acid rain occurs when acidic gases in the air dissolve in rain water. The main substance responsible for acid rain is sulphur dioxide gas; produced by burning coal. Sulphur + Oxygen Sulphur dioxide S + O 2 SO 2

Damage caused Buildings Carbonates in some stone and some mortar dissolve in acid Metal structures Steel and several other metals are dissolved by acid Plants Most cannot grow in very acidic soils; leaves damaged by acid rain. Fish Cannot live in acidic lake or river water
