2
Level 2 Unit 1 Exploring the Engineering World Next > L2 U1 Exploring the Engineering World: Approach given here is formed by following the awarding bodies: Learning outcomes Assessment tasks Learning outcomes: Engineering sectors and their products or services (LO.1) Job opportunities available within the engineering industry and the role of professional engineering institutions (LO.2) Achievements in engineering that relate to social and economic development (LO.3) Rights and responsibilities of employers and employees in engineering (LO.4)
3
Level 2 Unit 1 Exploring the Engineering World ST200 Electronic Communications module is used for students to explore in depth one particular engineering sector Engineering theme: It covers: Early telecommunications Telegraph and telephone Mobile communication Broadcasting technology Applications of electronic communications The Electronic Communications module includes activities that will help during unit delivery Next > It is used in particular to look at an important engineering sector and also for looking at developments through time
4
Level 2 Unit 1 Exploring the Engineering World Delivery and assessment approach Assessment task sheets contain questions for students to answer A scheme of work contains suggestions of research activities for students to acquire the knowledge: Student textbook Internet sites Ideas for visits Unlike other units where students perform assessed tasks and report on their work, the assessment of this unit requires students to answer a series of questions based largely on research of the engineered world Next > The Electronic Communications module will support and motivate students to explore one engineering sector (LO.1) and look at the history and development of telecommunications technology (LO.3)
5
Level 2 Unit 1 Exploring the Engineering World Assessment task 1 - questions on engineering sectors: 1.Describe two different sectors of engineering. Give examples of products or services provided by each of these two sectors. 2.Identify and describe the function of the products or services provided from each of the engineering sectors identified above. 3. Give examples of commercially available products or services available from engineering companies within the sectors you have identified and explain the function and operation of each product or service. Next >
6
Level 2 Unit 1 Exploring the Engineering World Assessment task 2 questions on opportunities in engineering: Next > 1.Describe four different job roles that are available in engineering companies. 2.Evaluate the experience, skills and qualifications needed in order to gain such a position and identify opportunities for further progression beyond the role. 3.Describe the role of the Engineering Council UK and of its licensed professional engineering institutions. 4.Evaluate the obligations and benefits for professional engineering registration.
7
Level 2 Unit 1 Exploring the Engineering World Assessment Task 3 – questions on achievements in Engineering Describe a key achievement in engineering from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, identifying significant dates and key people involved and referring to social and economic developments. Describe key developments that made these achievements possible and comment on their economic or social impact. Evaluate how these key developments in engineering directly impacted social and economic life at a local and national level. Next >

Level 2 Unit 1 Exploring the Engineering World Assessment Task 4 – questions on responsibilities of employers and employees End > Produce a brief which could be circulated to the team describing the key responsibilities of employers and employees in accordance with the current Employment Act. A manager for a medium sized engineering establishment would be responsible for ensuring that the team was familiar with appropriate employer legislation. Describe the responsibilities of employers and employees in relation to employment legislation applicable to working in the engineering sector. Explain how you would encourage the team to carry out their responsibilities while at work.
