ALGEBRA READINESS “Graphing Linear Functions” (8-4) How do you graph a linear (line) function? To graph any function: 1.Make a function table (x & y table) where the x values (horizontal axis on the graph) are the input values (also called independent values) and the y values are the output (or dependent) values. Make up your own x, or input values, and find the y, or output values for those x values. Write the x and y solution sas ordered pairs. 2.Plot those (x, y) pairs and connect the points together. Example: Graph y = - x + 12. 1313 Substitute your own x values into the equation and find the corresponding y values. Write the solutions to the equations as ordered pairs (x, y) Step 2: Graph the ordered pairs Step 3: Draw a line through the points.

ALGEBRA READINESS Suppose you buy a $4 bag of food for your dog every week. Use the table below to make a graph of the cost of the dog food. Number of Weeks 1234 Cost of Dog Food 481216 Then, plot the points. Use the horizontal axis for the number of weeks. Use the vertical axis for the total cost. Finally, connect the points with a line. Graphing Linear Functions LESSON 8-4 First, make a table relating the number of weeks to the cost of dog food.

ALGEBRA READINESS Model the function rule y = + 2 using a table of values and a graph. 1313 x Step 1: Choose input value for x. Evaluate to find y. Step 3: Join the points to form a line. LESSON 4-3 Function Rules, Tables, and Graphs (–3, 1) (0, 2) (3, 3) y = x + 2 1313 x (x, y) 0 y = (0) + 2 1313 = 0 + 2 = 2 (0, 2) 3 y = (3) + 2 1313 = 1 + 2 = 3 (3, 3) -3 y = (-3) + 2 1313 = -1 + 2 = 1 (-3, 1) Step 2: Plot the points for the ordered pairs.

ALGEBRA READINESS Graph the function y = |x| + 2. LESSON 8-4 Additional Examples Graphing Linear Functions Make a table of values. x y = | x | + 2 (x, y) 0 y = | 0 | + 2 = 0 + 2 = 2 (0, 2) 1 y = | 1 | + 2 = 1 + 2 = 3 (1, 3) y = | -1 | + 2 = 1 + 2 = 3 (-1, 3) 3 y = | 3 | + 2 = 2 + 2 = 5 (3, 5) -3 y = | -3 | + 2 = 3 + 2 = 5 (-3, 5) (0, 2) (1, 3) (-1, 3) (3, 5) (-3, 5) Then graph the data.
