Trailblazers Unit 1 lesson 1-3 Graphing and Data

Eyelets Let’s survey our class Kind of ShoesNumber of Pairs of Shoes High- Top Sneakers Low-top sneakers Lace Boots Sandals Slip-ons 1.Do you think Blanca’s data will help her convince her mother that slip-ons are not fashionable? Would a graph help? 2.What is the most common kind of shoe in Blanca’s class? 3.Let’s survey our class to see how it would compare with Blanca’s. 4.What is stylish in our school?

Using Variables  A variable is something that changes or varies in an experiment, like the Kind of Shoe and Number of Pairs of Shoes.  Possible outcomes for each variable are called values. VariableValues Kind of shoeHightop sneakers, lace boots, Number of shoes0, 3, 5 Shirt colorWhite, red, plaid Height56 inches, 57 inches

Types of variables Numerical Variable  Values that are numbers Catergorical Variable  Values that are not numbers Let’s write some examples of each type of variable

Let’s collect Data  Experiments involve counting or measuring. The numbers you get by counting or measuring are called data. Organizing and checking data are important parts of a scientist’s work. Number of EyeletsNumber of Pairs of Shoes 0 2 4 6 8 10 12 14 16

Graphs  When scientists have data, they look for patterns. Drawing a graph of your data can help you see patterns that are hard to notice in the data table.  Let’s create a bar graph of your data.  X axis Number of Eyelets  Y axis Number of Pairs of Shoes

Let’s fill in our data

Create questions that analyze our graph  Explore section page 6 and 7 in your math book

Let’s analyze the graphs on page 8 and 9 Augusta, Toussaint and G.W. Carver students.  Which graph goes with each school?  What is the mode for each graph?  Which graph is most like your class’s graph? Which school is most like your school?  What would an eyelets graph look like if you collected data in a kindergarten at your school?
