CAMBOURNE’S CONDITIONS OF LEARNING Children engage with literacy when these conditions exist in their classrooms: -when they have a worthwhile reason to write -when they are immersed in a print rich environment -when the process is demonstrated and they are given enough time to practise -when people believe that they will learn, have high expectations -when they go at the pace that is right for them, natural learning, responsible -when their attempts are accepted e.g. “WSAPONATM” (Once upon a time) and celebrated! Focus on effort and that this shows that knowledge is being applied -positive, nurturing feedback is given at point of need

13. AUTHORIAL AND SECRETARIAL Some stages of the writing process are authorial, so creative decisions need to be made. They relate to the meaning that the author is trying to convey. Adding detail, expanding ideas, taking bits out, adding bits in. Secretary Author Other stages are related to the mechanics of writing. So spelling, punctuation and grammar is the focus.

14. WRITER’S NOTEBOOK Students benefit from keeping a writer’s notebook. They can jot down experiences, ideas from lines from other stories, songs, scenes. They can paste swatches of colour, tickets from a show, photographs, newspaper clippings, sketches.
