1 Geographic analyses and Access to healthy foods How can geographic analyses help us create a more equitable and sustainable food system? Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future Concept model, 2010

2 What does Access to healthy foods really mean? –The combination of both availability of healthy foods and affordable prices Using GIS mapping tools to examine the landscape –Viewing the physical “food environment” within the context of social, political and marketplace realities of the current food system

3 Geographic Analyses: – CLF’s Maryland Mapping Project (state-wide) – Greater Philadelphia Food System Study (150 mile radius) http://www.dvrpc.org/Food/http://www.dvrpc.org/Food/ – The Reinvestment Fund’s Policy Map (nation-wide) www.trfund.com/TRF-LAA-widget.html www.trfund.com/TRF-LAA-widget.html – USDA Food Environment Atlas (nation-wide) http://www.ers.usda.gov/FoodAtlas/ http://www.ers.usda.gov/FoodAtlas/ Many of these “food maps” do not take into account where food comes from… but how will we create a better system without doing so?
