Matter Test Review Chemistry 9/23/14

Drill A sample of carbon dioxide is chilled until it turns into a solid. Then, as it warms, it turns directly back to a gas. A lightning bolt energizes it to a plasma state. After cooling, it returns to gaseous. Name each transition of state, and state the change in density and kinetic energy. HW: pg. 3 Matter—Substances vs. Mixtures

Objectives IWBAT describe the four states of matter, in terms of kinetic energy and density review the material from Unit 1 and see where I need to improve define elements, compounds, and mixtures, and give examples of each NOTE: Lab on FRIDAY—you MUST have closed toe shoes & hair tied back, etc.

Agenda Drill HW Review Unit 1 Test review Scientific Notation Problem re-teach Matter Notes Closure

pg. 1 Density Problems Check the answers: 1. 2 x 10 -3 g/mL 2. 1.0 g/mL 3. 5.0 g/mL 4. 8.96 g/cm 3 5. gold – greater density 6. benzene – greater mass 7. 8 g/mL

Unit 1 Test Ms. Bloedorn will distribute your Unit 1 Tests to you. Take a look at them and ask questions—we will go in order, from the front page to the back. We will review scientific notation, especially the problems. There will be a “do-over” section about scientific notation on your quiz on Friday—it is optional, and you may earn back ONLY as many points as you lost on that section.

Matter Notes pg. 2 in packet Let’s learn about matter!

Closure Give an example of: Element Compound Homogeneous mixture Heterogeneous mixture
