SPI 0807.5.4 (Biodiversity) Identify several reasons for the importance of maintaining the earth’s biodiversity. 8 Reasons to Maintain Biodiversity 1) To feed the world (limited variety of food plants) 2) For more medicine (many medicines come from wild plants) 3) To maintain our economies (lumber, fishing, farming, etc.) 4) Life support (trees provide oxygen, oysters clean the water) 5) To maintain food webs (webs are delicate and fragile) 6) To satisfy human curiosity (learn more about nature) 7) Preserve nature's beauty (Parks: Yellowstone, Smokies, etc.) 8) To respect all life forms (all species have a right to live) Notes Science SPI 0807.5.4 Biodiversity Biodiversity: is the amount and variety of organisms that live in a given area at a given time.

1) To feed the world 90 percent of the world's food comes from only 20 plant species Reasons to Maintain Biodiversity 2) To provide more and better medicine 40% in the USA comes from plants, animals, or microorganisms. 4) To provide life support for our biosphere Plants (trees etc.) & animals (oysters etc.) provide vital life services 5) To avoid disrupting food webs We tend to over-hunt, over-harvest, pollute, and destroy habitats 3) To maintain our economies Some plants & animals are very important parts of our economies 6) To satisfy human curiosity People enjoy learning about nature and wildlife 7) To preserve nature's beauty People enjoy visiting places with high biodiversity 8) To respect life in all its forms Even organisms we dislike (spiders/snakes) have a right to exist

Here is an example of a question you might see on a quiz or test. Questions Science Biodiversity-Question 02 SPI 0807.5.4 Biodiversity

Here is an example of a question you might see on a quiz or test. Questions Science Biodiversity-Question 05 SPI 0807.5.4 Biodiversity

Notes Science  Experiments are key procedure that include independent and dependent variables and controls (step 4 shown above) SPI 0807.Inq.2 (Tools and Procedures) Tools and Procedures in Science  Procedures in science are called the scientific method Scientific Method Step 1: Make Observations Step 2: Ask A Question Step 3: Form A Hypothesis Step 4: Test The Hypothesis  By doing experiments Step 5: Analyze The Results Step 6: Draw Conclusions Step 7: Communicate results

Scientific Tools Volume: milliliters (mL) or cubic centimeters (cm 3 ) Temperature: degrees Celsius (C) Length: meters (m) Mass: grams (g) Time: seconds, minutes, hours, days, years Force/Weight: newtons (N)

In an experiment… …you could measure the strength of an acid or base with a…  …pH Indicator -measures acidity and basicity -unit of measure: pH scale reading from 0 to 14 Notes Science SPI 0807.Inq.2 (Tools and Procedures) Scientific Tools

In an experiment… …you might use a galvanometer to measure electrical current …measures both the strength & direction of electrical current …to just measure the current you could use an ammeter Notes Science SPI 0807.Inq.2 (Tools and Procedures) Scientific Tools
