Vocabulary sinusitis is an inflammation, or swelling of the tissue lining the sinuses. Normally sinuses are filled with air, but when the sinuses are blocked and filled with fluid germs (bacteria, fungi, and viruses) can grow and cause an infection.

Background can be caused by smoking, an infection, allergies, or irritation to the sinuses. About 37 million Americans suffer from at least one episode of sinusitis each year There are different types: acute: cold like symptoms such as runny nose, facial pain, usually lasts 4 weeks max Subacute: Inflammation lasting 4-8 weeks Chronic: inflammation symptoms lasting 8 weeks or longer Recurrent: several attacks throughout the year

Symptoms headache facial tenderness
pressure or pain in the sinuses, ears, and/or teeth sore throat feeling of nasal stuffiness cloudy nasal drainage fever

Diagnosis Doctor will check for following: tender sinus cavities
2 or more symptoms Thick yellow/green mucous

Treatment Acute: prescribe a decongestant or antibiotics
Chronic: vaporizer/inhaling steam; warm compresses; saline nose drops
