ELIZABETHAN ENGLAND

QUEEN ELIZABETH

Elizabeth I was 25 years old when she became Queen of England in 1558. Her 45-year reign, which ended with her death in 1603, saw England's emergence as a nation of tremendous political power.

Under Elizabeth's leadership, England experienced the true cultural reawakening or renaissance of thought, art, and vision which had begun in Italy a century earlier.

FASHION

Fashion in the Elizabethan age was a way of expressing oneself; the fashion truly helped to reveal the general culture of the period.

The people of this time were very hair-conscious. Their hair was their most prized possession. Many people of the Elizabethan Age were very fashionable and splendid.

THE PLAGUE

Plagues devastated Elizabethan England. They were a constant threat to the people and the land. The most devastating to England was the bubonic plague. London was afflicted over a dozen times during the 1500's.

This bacteria lived in rats and other rodents. Human beings were infected through bites from the fleas that lived on these rats.

THE GLOBE THEATER

THE GLOBE THEATER IS WHERE MOST OF SHAKESPEARE’S PLAYS WERE PERFORMED.

THE GLOBE DID NOT HAVE A ROOF; THEREFORE, PLAYS WERE ALWAYS PERFORMED DURING DAYLIGHT HOURS.

SHAKESPEARE

Widely regarded as the greatest writer of all time, William Shakespeare (or Shakespeare) occupies a position unique in world literature.

He was baptized on April 26, 1564; his birthday is traditionally celebrated on April 23.

Shakespeare's will (made on March 25, 1616) is a long and detailed document. His signature to the will was done with a shaky hand. Perhaps Shakespeare was already ill.

He died on April 23, 1616. No name was inscribed on his gravestone. Instead these lines, possibly his own, appeared:

“Good friend, for Jesus' sake forbear To dig the dust enclosed here. Blest be the man that spares these stones, And curst be he that moves my bones.”
