2 W HY T HIS P RESENTATION ? In middle school, students start the process of career exploration. During this time, career exploration opens up a person’s “individual interests, abilities, career values, and needs by exploring jobs and how they fit into the world of work” (Arrington, 2000) Career exploration provides students with more specific and detailed information (and experiences) that is used by them (and others like counselors) when beginning to set tentative career goals This also helps deciding future school curriculum

3 H OW W OULD I A DAPT T HIS ? Elementary- With elementary students I would make this into a classwide activity where we discuss multiple “common” job interests for their age and the types of classes they would need to take down the road. High- With freshman I could keep this same presentation. For sophomores-seniors, I would work on what they need to do after high school to achieve these goals.

6 W HAT S HOULD Y OU B E D OING ? – EXPLORING CAREERS Hands on exploration (job shadowing) is one of the best ways to explore a career, but one can narrow down their options using multiple tools… O*NET, Myers Briggs Type Indicator, Campbell’s Interest & Skill Survey, etc. Websites http://www.driveofyourlife.org/ http://breitlinks.com/careers/career_activities.htm http://uwhelp.wisconsin.edu/careers/exploration.aspx Job Fairs

7 Y OUR A SSIGNMENT F OR T ODAY Pick three things you might want to do when you get older. Look up each occupation on O*NET. http://www.onetonline.org/ Answer the following questions about each one. List some “knowledge” areas needed to be successful in this career area. List 3 skills needed for this job. List what degree level is needed for this job. List the average salary for the job.

8 F OR N EXT T IME … Look at classes with your parents that may match the areas you need for the job you are interested in. Write down these classes on a piece of paper so next time we can start developing a Four Year Plan with this information!
