Causes of the American Revolution

Discontent in the Colonies
Colonists were angry because Great Britain wanted to tax the colonists in order to pay for the French and Indian War. Great Britain began to enforce new and old laws to “get their money”

Navigation Acts protect the economic interests of the British Empire and colonists could only ship goods on British ships. Fine for Georgia, we did most of our trading with GB, bad for other colonies who traded with other countries. Sugar Act placed a tax on imports of sugar and molasses from West Indies…GA did a lot of trading with them…this affected us Stamp Act was a tax placed on newspapers, legal documents, and licenses People were very angry and reacted violently This was only carried out in Georgia “Liberty Boys “ who were part of the bigger group “Sons of Liberty” opposed this The Georgia Gazette stopped printing for a year until the act was repealed.

Protests Increase Townshend Acts of taxed imports of tea, paper, glass, and coloring for paints. The most common way to protest unfair taxing was by boycotting certain items. 1/3 of the population stayed loyal to Great Britain during the Revolutionary War…they were called Tories People who supported the colonies were called Patriots.

“No Taxation Without Representation
“No Taxation Without Representation!” This was the pre-revolution war cry. Boston Massacre- A few young men in Boston began throwing snowballs at British soldiers and calling them names. The soldiers fired into the crowd and killed 5 people. One of them was a freed slave by the name of Crispus Attucks.

Tea Act- British parliament passed this act stating that the East India Tea Company could sell its tea at a discounted rate to the colonies. This made the colonists mad because it was cheaper than their price. They felt this was a trick to get them to buy the cheaper tea, but still pay the tax. Remember! They had been boycotting tea at this point. Boston Tea Party- patriots including Sam Adams and Paul Revere dressed up as Indians, boarded 3 British ships in Boston Harbor, and dumped 342 chests of tea into Boston Bay Sesame Street: Kermit News And Boston T Party - YouTube

The Intolerable Acts Great Britain felt they had to punish the colonies for the actions of the Patriots Intolerable Acts Port of Boston closed until people of Massachusetts paid for the tea. No town meetings without the agreement of their governor. Any British official who committed a capital crime would have to be tried GB, not a colonial court. Quartering Act- citizens had to feed and provide shelter for British soldiers at their own expense

A Colony Divided In response to the Intolerable Acts, the Continental Congress met in secret to discuss breaking away from Great Britain and/or changing rules and regulations but still remaining under British control. Georgia did NOT send a delegate. Agreed to stop all trade with GB Urged each colony to set up committees of safety which would enforce the boycott of GB
