Monitoring for the ALICE O 2 Project 11 February 2016
2
Introduction ▶ O2 is the new ALICE computing system, performing online reconstruction to achieve a high data reduction ALICE O 2 CWG10 Control, Configuration and Monitoring 2 Detectors 8000 Read-out Links 250 FLPs First Level Processors (FLPs) 1500 EPNs Event Processing Nodes (EPNs) Input: 250 ports Output : 1500 ports 1.1 TB/s Switching Network 500 GB/s90 GB/s 68 Storage Arrays 34 Storage Servers Storage Network Input: 1500 ports Output : 34 ports

Monitoring requirements ▶ Monitor hosts, network, storage ▶ Monitor processes (system: cpu, mem, etc) ▶ Monitor processes (application: internal) ▶ Provide real-time displays (see next slides) ▶ Provide historical record ▶ Allow actions on monitoring values ▶ Support high frequency metrics: ~ 600 KHz total ▶ We don’t need to store everything in permanent storage ALICE O2 CWG2 Tools, guidelines and procedures | ALICE Technical board 3

MonALISA usage in current DAQ system ▶ 100s of data collectors send data to 1 MonALISA Service via ApMon ▶ A few MonALISA Service data filters aggregate data into higher level metrics ▶ 1 MonALISA Service data filter sends data via ZeroMQ for display in dedicated dashboard in the ALICE Control Room ▶ Clusters = Run Numbers ▶ Nodes = Detectors, Event Building Nodes, Readout Nodes, Readout Links, … Until end 2018 ALICE O2 CWG2 Tools, guidelines and procedures | ALICE Technical board 4

MonALISA usage in O 2 ▶ MonALISA is a candidate for Monitoring tool in O 2 ▶ 600 KHz should be possible with multiple MonALISA Services ▶ Strong knowledge base in ALICE From 2016 ALICE O2 CWG2 Tools, guidelines and procedures | ALICE Technical board 6
