The College Text: Before you start to read... Read the objectives at the first of the chapter. Skim over the whole chapter, noticing headings and subheadings. Read the captions under pictures, charts, etc. Read the questions or summary at the end of the chapter.

Metacognitive Questions What do I already know about this topic? How does this new information fit in with what I already know? What connections can I make to what we have learned in class, my own experiences, etc.? What questions do I have about this reading?

While you are reading... Throw away your highlighter pen – it is not a good strategy for active reading. Make annotations in the margins. Write questions you have, connections you make to our discussions in class, connections to other reading, your life, etc.

Studying for the Comm Quizzes Look over your Objectives Handout before you begin the chapter to preview the most important concepts. See if there are vocabulary words listed at the first or end of the chapter. Know them. Pay attention to bolded words Make flash cards for the concepts
