1 LANGUAGE ARTS This week we will continue our unit, “On the Farm and Farm Animals.” We will discuss why farms and farm animals are so important to people and how we get the food we eat. Some of the classic literature we will be enjoying this week include The Little Red Hen, Barnyard Banter, and If You Give a Pig a Pancake. Our high-frequency word for this week is: to and and. We will also review all previously taught short a and i word families and the vowels a and i. Vocabulary enrichment includes the “Wonderful Words” : habitat, responsibility, beneath, raise, enter. The students will continue journal writing using pictures, labeling items in their picture, and creating words and/or a sentence through inventive spelling. MATH: This week we will begin Unit 2. This unit focuses on numbers to 10, the count sequence to 30, and counting to understand that the final number in the sequence refers to the total number of objects in the set (cardinality). Academic Vocabulary: number mat, five frame, ten frame, compare, cube tower, quick images, add, take away, double, comparative language – small, smaller, smallest, large, larger, largest, big, bigger, biggest, less, least, more, most, label, less than, more than, same, different Announcements: Library News: This week our students will have their first opportunity to check out a library book. The students are so excited about being able to choose a book independently! Please help your child learn this school routine by helping them remember to pack their book in their book bag the night before their scheduled library day. This is The only way they may check out a new one! OUR LIBRARY DAY IS EVERY MONDAY. Thanks so much! SNACK SHACK HELP NEEDED: We are currently looking for someone who is interested in part-time employment of about 2 hours a day to manage our Snack Shack. It is a fun job that allows you to get outside and spend time with the students each day. If we are unable to fill the spot, we will be looking for volunteers who can commit to one day a week. If you are interested in either option, please contact Mrs. Smith at 626-3950. ** CLUBS ~ 4 More Weeks of Clubs. Just to give you a run down of the days of the week each club meets. Monday : Recorder Club (in the A.M.) & Science Club (4:00-5:00) Tuesday : Chorus (in the A.M.) & Bricks 4 Kidz (4:00-5:00) Wednesday Afternoons 4:00-5:00: Getting Active with Pre-K & Kindergarten Thursday Afternoons 4:00-5:00: Sports Club **Our annual MES ADVENTURE FEST is Saturday, October 31, 2015, from 9-2:30p.m. Come enjoy this family fun day with your child! Please consider helping make this day a success for the students, families, and our school… Each class is still in great need of: *** Item or monetary donation for their class theme basket for silent auction. Log books read on your Bookworm & send in when completed! ** Send your child’s HW to school on Friday for checking and a treat! MONDAY : Our word wall word for this week is “ to ” and “ and ”. Write one sentence using the word “to” and one sentence using the word “and”. Underline the word wall words in your sentences. Remember to sound out unknown words and use lots of details in your picture. TUESDAY : Draw two feet. How many toes? Label with the numbers as you count to find out. WEDNESDAY : * Read a story together. Talk about the characters and setting of the story. Was there a problem in the story? How did the characters solve the problem? Draw a picture about the story (including the setting and character). Use lots of details and color. Label 3 things in your picture or write a sentence about it. THURSDAY : Write the numbers in order from least to greatest. a.5, 2, 8, 4 b.9, 1, 7, 5 c.6, 3, 4, 8
