The start of the school year which is always on 1 st September regardless of which day of the week it falls on This tradition started during the Soviet Union times It is an important day for all pupils, teachers, and parents, and especially for pupils and student attending school and university for the first time The day is also dedicated to teachers in appreciation of their work

Activities on Knowledge Day During Knowledge Day a first year pupil is carried on the shoulder of a final year pupil ringing the first bell (первый звонок) New and old pupils all gather together to thank their teachers and present them with chocolates, flowers and other gifts Celebratory assemblies are held to welcome all the new pupils and students The celebrations carry on at home in the evening when all the family gather around their tables lavishly decorated with flowers to eat and talk about the day

The Significance of Knowledge Day Knowledge Day welcomes all pupils and students to school with a special greeting from the head of school or university It is celebrated in most of the former Soviet Union countries It marks the end of the summer and beginning of autumn It tells the pupils and students the importance of education and that they have to learn hard to gain knowledge
