The Ability of Different Brands of Contact Solution on Preventing Contacts from Dehydrating Katlyn Gelling Aberdeen Central High School Purpose Hypothesis Procedure Statistical Analysis My hypothesis is that the Opti-Free brand contact solution will have the most effective solution for keeping contacts from drying out and the contacts soaking in this brand of solution will stay moist the longest. The purpose of this project is to carry out an experiment that will determine which brand of contact lens solution out of OptiFree, BioTru, Revitalens, and ReNu keeps contacts from drying out the longest. An experiment like this is a way to keep up with the comforts of the majority of the population. For the people who choose contact lenses as their corrective lens of choice, a possible problem that could be encountered is contacts drying out throughout the day. This can help avoid discomfort for those who constantly rely on contacts for vision correction. Materials ScaleRevitaLensWeigh Boats Opti-FreeReNuContacts BioTruContact CasesTissues Raw Data Conclusion My hypothesis was that Opti-Free would be the most effective solution for preventing the contacts from drying out. The results from the ANOVA one-way (unstacked) tests do not support this hypothesis. However, I can support a NULL hypothesis because the statistical analysis results support it; the P-Values for both ANOVA one-way (unstacked) tests run were greater than 0.05, supporting that no contact solution was significantly more effective at preventing contacts from drying out than another solution. Label each well with the solution it is filled with. 2) Using tissues, dry the four pairs of contacts of their previous solution and put the four pairs contacts directly in the new solutions. 3) Let the contacts sit in the solution overnight. 4) Set up the scale (measuring two decimal places out in milligrams). 5) Gather twelve weigh boats. Label three with Opti-Free (1, 2, and 3). Label three with BioTru (1, 2, and 3). Label three with RevitaLens (1, 2, and 3). Label the last three with ReNu (1, 2, and 3). 6) Record the weight of the first weigh boat. 7) Take a contact out of a recorded solution and dab off the excess solution with a tissue. 8) Put in the weigh boat and record the new weight. 9) Check the new weight at intervals of one hour and two and a half hours and record it. 10) At the same time, repeat steps 6-9 for the other contacts. The data table below shows the weight of the contacts in milligrams over time in each trial as taken by the scale. The two data tables below show the weight lost, or the amount of solution evaporated (in milligrams) for each contact. One shows the weight lost of each after one hour, and the other shows the weight lost after two and a half hours. I ran an ANOVA one-way (unstacked) test on this data. The P-Value for the first test run (after one hour) is 0.639 and, more importantly, the value is larger than 0.05. This means that none of the variables were significant over the others. The P-Value for the second test run (after two and a half hours) is 0.251, also larger than the accepted value of 0.05. Again, none of the variables were significant over the others. These four different contact lens solutions (Opti-Free, Bio Tru, ReNu, and RevitaLens) filled the wells of the contact cases shown The contacts were placed in the solution in these contact cases overnight. The next day they were taken out to be repeatedly weighed.
