DUE DATES Today –Spectroscopy Problem Set, Part I, 1.-5. –Notebook copies of Bromination of Toluene before leaving the lab Next Week –Spectroscopy Problem Set, Part II, 1. –At beginning of lab – Bromination of Toluene Report
2
In Lab Next Week Nitration of Methyl benzoate experiment More review of Spectroscopy
3
In Lab Today Review of Electrophilic Aromatic Substitution Bromination of toluene experiment Review of IR and Mass Spectrometry Writing a lab report / Report Form Demonstration of FT-IR; sample plates (Pavia p. 852-853); %Transmittance vs. Absorption mode
4
Notebook Keeping Notebooks should be prepared according to the instructions in the Manual. For this experiment, a Data Table that includes M.W., density, mass and calculated moles is appropriate. Since the procedure is modified from the Manual, changes should be noted.
5
Notebook Keeping Record all observations. Be clear and specific in your description. All calculations must be clearly shown and labeled.
6
Experiment Notes Bromine (Br 2 ) is a hazardous and extremely corrosive substance. Follow Procedure B – the prep room personnel will handle the toluene and bromine. Use the same balance for all mass determinations. Take notebook to balance! During the wait time we will review spectroscopy.
7
Experiment Notes See PowerPoint – “Aromatic Bromination”
8
Experiment Notes Keep vials in hood and prepare salt plates there. NaCl plates are very fragile and expensive. Handle with great care and only by the edges. Then perform IR on your product mixture. Every member of the group should have a printout of the spectrum. See end-of-lab clean-up assignments for the semester.
9
Experiment Notes The spectrum might look like this You will need to draw in approximate peaks before triangulation. –See Pavia p. 831 for triangulation

The Report The Report Form for Bromination is in the Manual. Written report guidelines are found in the Manual (and on my web page). There are also specific instructions for writing the Bromination report.
