Jessica’s political science professor has assigned the class a service-learning project that will require the students to choose a local non-profit organization within the community.

What days are the students going to volunteer? What school are the students going to volunteer at? Who is going to be responsible for keeping track of student’s progress? Is there going to be a lesson plan? In case of emergencies, how will I affect the student’s ability to complete their volunteering hours?

School Preference is South Central Elementary Days of volunteering will be Friday of every week between the hours of 1:45PM to 3:00PM Each individual is responsible to provide their own transportation Teacher will provide all essential teaching materials

Possible argument against your solution What if the teacher prefers to provide her own lesson plan? Your response The trio would be prepared to accept the teacher’s request in providing her own lesson plan for them to follow, and make any other adjustments if necessary. Risks associated with your proposed solution After some sessions the fourth grade teacher might change his/her opinion about allowing the trio to volunteer in her classroom. Justification statement The trio has established a well thought out plan because it allows flexibility for any unexpected issues. Anticipation of events If any one of the members was to drop the class, there will be no complications with their volunteer hours.

Jennifer, Louis and Amanda are given a small classroom to tutor eight fourth graders. The fourth graders they are tutoring are multi-ethnic, which means they have diverse racial backgrounds, as well as various social and economic backgrounds. They notice that some of the students are using racial slurs or making degrading remarks about each other’s race.

Trio Consult the teacher about the problem Teacher puts the School’s Code of conduct rules into Force

Possible argument against your solution How would it be possible for some fourth graders to change so dramatically from one week to the other? Your response The teacher dedicated two class days to educate the students about the consequences of discrimination. She also involuntary made the students who took part in this incident to attend Saturday school. The teacher also scheduled a mandatory parent teacher conference to discuss the incident between the students. Anticipation of events If a parent is not able to attend the mandatory parent teacher conference he/she must make an appointment with the teacher to discuss the student code of conduct and the consequences. Justification statement By notifying the teacher the trio was able to prevent future conflict between the students. If the trio would have ignored the problem it could have escalated to point where a student could have been seriously harmed in an emotional and a physical way. Risks associated with your proposed solution Parents might not agree with the solution because of their racist beliefs that they in turn pass on to their children.

Once Louis, Jessica and Amanda complete their volunteering within the elementary school, they disagree on including how fourth graders used racial slurs and disparaging remarks to one another.

Briefly mention the racial remarks incident

Possible argument against your solution How will the professor react about the trio not including full details of the incident? Your response The main focus of the report was outlining the lesson plans not the personal interactions of the students, therefore the trio feels confident that the professor will be content with their final report. Anticipation of events The professor might ask to include more details about the incident, but the trio will refuse by explaining that the teacher and the school district would prefer to keep that issue behind closed doors. Justification statement The purpose of the community service was to teach the fourth graders how to read and write not to enforce the school’s code of conduct. Risks associated with your proposed solution The professor can decide to give the trio a lower grade if they refuse to add more detail about the incident in their final report.
