For each card, decide if the statement helps to answer the question Why far side? Sort the cards into: Relevant – this helps to explain why SETI wants to put a listening telescope on the far side of the Moon. Not relevant – this statement does not help to explain why SETI wants to put a listening telescope on the far side of the Moon. 3 Take the relevant cards. Organise them from the most important reason to the least important reason for putting the telescope on the far side of the Moon. 4 Plan a 30-second talk to summarise the reasons for putting a listening telescope on the far side of Moon. Why Far Side?2 A The Moon orbits the Earth once every 27 days. B The Moon rotates on its axis once every 27 days. C The Moon is a satellite of the Earth. D Astronauts on the far side of the Moon will have good radio contact with Earth. E The far side of the Moon receives signals from a greater area of sky than the near side. F The far side of the Moon cannot receive radio signals directly from Earth. G The Moon blocks radio signals sent from Earth. H The Moon is made from rock. Force Pairs Give each person a straw. Put a malteser in the middle of a tray. Now blow towards the malteser through your straws – each of you must blow from opposite sides. Watch what happens to the malteser. Now try to make the malteser stay still whilst you both blow. Solo Task Force In your pair, choose one person to be person A and the other to be person B. Person A – find a way to apply a force through your straw to keep the malteser in the air. Person B – find a different way to apply a force through your straw to keep the malteser in the air. SETI Training Lab: Chocolate Challenge 2 1Finish the diagrams to show the forces on the malteser. Use one arrow to represent each force. Draw bigger arrows for stronger forces and smaller arrows for weaker forces. 2Now draw diagrams to show how you kept the malteser in the air in the Solo Task Force. Fig 1 Fig 2 Fig 3
