Computing Strategies
2
A computing strategy should identify – the hardware, – the software, – Internet services, and – the network connectivity needed to support the level of data service you are providing. Match to service level
3
We tend to be dealt the computing environment in which we must operate. Few of us have enough influence to steer the direction of central computing on our campus. Thus, we try to match our computing needs with the resources provided locally. Match to service level
4
Desktop computing power – hardware for staff use fastest affordable processor largest affordable hard drive largest affordable monitor removable media devices and ports Strategic elements
5
Desktop computing power – software for staff use statistical software standard office suite network tools utilities – compression Strategic elements
6
Large quantities of disk space on a fast system – uncompress files – unpacking files – package and compress files Strategic elements
7
Public workstations – The “Commons,” knowledge, learning, information (large public computing labs in the library) – Statistical and GIS software installed in commons settings – Partnership with campus lab support or software license budget required Strategic elements
8
Internet services and tools – online presence data services website OPAC – online services subscriptions local servers Strategic elements
9
High-speed network connectivity – off and on campus transfer – may require using services elsewhere on campus – may need to work with network administrator to ensure adequate bandwidth Strategic elements
10
Mass storage access on a network file system Strategic elements
11
Access to high-performance computing (HPC) with statistical applications – powerful system running Unix – handle larger scale problems Strategic elements
12
Support Software – Web server services Nesstar or SDA – Public, collaborative Web services for sharing data and conducting data visualization Strategic elements
13
Investigate local computing support – includes centralized Unix services and site licenses for software Implementation Strategy
14
Purchase compatible computing equipment – simplifies working with patrons – simplifies the sharing of peripheral devices – receive maintenance support Implementation Strategy
15
System administration takes a lot of time! – think twice about becoming your own system administrator Implementation Strategy
16
Consult your data service colleagues Implementation Strategy
