(Station being called) THIS IS (Station calling) KC0JUO THIS IS KB7VML If the station does not answer after a second call: STATION NOT HEARD, THIS IS KB7VML OUT. This lets other stations know the frequency is available. You should not make another call for the same station for at least 10 minutes unless it is urgent or an emergency situation. To solicit contact with any station on a repeater THIS IS KB7VML LISTENING/MONITORING/etc. This lets other stations on frequency know that you’re available for a QSO
3
Prowords Procedural Words Add to the efficiency of communications Never used instead of text in a message
4
Choose a Good Communications Site Find the high ground (the higher the antenna, the better) VHF is line of sight Stay away from interference generators High power lines Power Transformers Underground Cables Computers (even in the field) Other radios on different frequencies
5
Common Problems & Solutions Operator Failure! (This is the most common cause!) Make sure you are following normal procedures, frequencies, offsets, etc Check the radio Is the radio turned on, correct channel, and volume up? Is the battery good? (Replace with a charged battery) Swap over to a backup radio if you have one Switch to a repeater, if available (Assuming you are operating simplex already) Ask for a relay Move to higher ground or even another location
6
Stations obtain permission from the Net Control Station (NCS) prior to communicating with other stations in the Net Often started with a “preamble” followed by roll call, to determine which members are monitoring the Net Each station identifies itself, as called or directed Following roll call, transmission of traffic occurs Messages are handled in order of precedence Emergency Priority Routine
7
Controls and directs the flow of radio traffic within their Net Is primarily responsible for net discipline Speak only when asked to by the NCS or when you have formal traffic for the Net You must seek permission to address any station other than the NCS Follow the direction and example of the NCS
8
In this net, the Net Control Station authorizes member stations to transmit traffic to other stations in the Net without obtaining prior permission from the NCS Non-directed net operation does not relieve the NCS of the responsibility for maintaining circuit discipline
