1 Functions of Lighting – Allow a person to see without straining his or her eyes – Enhance the look of a room or space – Improve safety in areas that may be hazardous Copyright © Notice: The materials are copyrighted © and trademarked ™ as the property of The Curriculum Center for Family and Consumer Sciences, Texas Tech University.

2 Ambient Lighting – Provides general illumination indoors for daily activities, and outdoors for safety and security. Task Lighting – Provides focused lighting for specific tasks, such as under-counter kitchen lights, table lamps, or bathroom mirror lights. Accent Lighting – Draws attention to special features or enhances the aesthetic qualities of an indoor or outdoor environment. 3 Types of Lighting – Natural light Light that is provided by the sun Strong sunlight can produce extreme glares and shadows – Artificial light Controllable and predictable – Flourescent lighting – High-intensity discharge lighting – Incandescent lighting – Low-pressure sodium lighting – Outdoor solar lighting – LED lighting A lighting comparison chart from the U.S. Department of Energy is available at www.energysavers.gov/your_home/ligh ting_daylighting/index.cfm/mytopic=12 030. www.energysavers.gov/your_home/ligh ting_daylighting/index.cfm/mytopic=12 030 A lighting comparison chart from the U.S. Department of Energy is available at www.energysavers.gov/your_home/ligh ting_daylighting/index.cfm/mytopic=12 030. www.energysavers.gov/your_home/ligh ting_daylighting/index.cfm/mytopic=12 030 Copyright © Notice: The materials are copyrighted © and trademarked ™ as the property of The Curriculum Center for Family and Consumer Sciences, Texas Tech University.

4 Basic Types of Light Distribution – Indirect light The light is directed to a ceiling or wall and is reflected from that surface. – Direct light The light shines directly on an object or area. 5 Basic Types of Light Distribution – Mixed light A comination of direct and indirect light Some light shines down on a surface and some light is reflected off of a surface – Diffused light The light is dispersed evenly in all directions. 6 Illumination – The distribution of light on a horizontal surface. Lumen – A measurement of light emitted by a lamp. For example, a 100 – watt incandescent lamp produces about 1750 lumens. Footcandle – A lumen of light distributed over a 1-square- foot area. It is the measurement of the intensity of illumination. 7 Efficacy – The ratio of light produced to energy consumed. It is measured as the number of lumens produced divided by the rate of electricity consumption (lumens per watt). Glare – The excessive brightness from a direct light source that makes it difficult to see what one wishes to see. Light quality – The measurement of how well people in a lighted space can see to do visual tasks and how visually comfortable they feel in that space.
