Slopes in Action by K. LaMarr Jones

What is a Slope? A slope (mathematically) is a graphical representation that defines/reflects the steepness of a line. The formula for slope (m) is y 2 -y 1 /x 2 -x 1, or the ratio of vertical change to horizontal change aka “rise over run.” In regards to representing motion, the flatter a line is the slower it moves; conversely, the steeper a line is the faster it moves.

Slopes are Everywhere Slides at playgrounds provide fun and laughter for children. And my favorite “slope in action…” There are many real-world slopes around us that we encounter everyday. The roads we drive on have various degrees of steepness. Skateboard ramps would be boring without a serious degree of steepness! Slopes on the roofs (called ‘pitch’) of our houses allow rain to run off, preventing water damage. The Winter Olympics have many competitions that have slope features, such as the downhill skiing race.

The Roller-Coaster!!

What makes roller- coasters so much fun and attractive?

Fun Facts about Roller- Coasters Roller-coasters are fast Roller-coasters are fun Roller-coasters are popular Roller-coasters are safe Roller-coasters are scary

I Feel the Need for Speed! The Millennium Force, at Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio, reaches 300 feet in height, a top speed of 92 mph, and lasts 2 minutes 30 seconds. Roller-coasters are really a series of slopes that have plenty of action for the courageous soul! The Top Thrill Dragster reaches a height of 400 feet, a top speed of 120 mph, and takes only 17 seconds.
