Oregon Spatial Data Library Enhancements 2015-2017 BIENNIUM FIT PROJECT Redesign

Project team  Janine Salwasser, Myrica McCune, Jimmy Kagan, Institute for Natural Resources  Marc Rempel, OSU Libraries and Press  Cy Smith, Josh Tanner, David Mather, DAS-GEO  Eric Brandt, Nick Seigal, Mike Travess, Lane Council of Governments  Tanya Haddad, Oregon Department of Land Conservation and Development  Todd Hallenbeck, West Coast Governors Alliance on Ocean Health  Don Pettit, Malavika Bishop, Oregon Department of Environmental Quality

Objective  Improve Oregon Spatial Data Library to make publishing, discovering and accessing data and metadata easier and more informative

Expected benefits  Enhanced ability to discover and access data and metadata with Framework data elements readily identifiable  Improved coordination and communications  Updated OSDL metadata and data submission workflows

Six areas of enhancement: 1. Scoping and Coordination 2. Internal Data Repository 3. Metadata Collection and Workflows 4. User Interface 5. External Site Integration 6. Site Management and Support

Scoping & Coordination  Develop “ideal” framework data management process  Establish FIT Data Catalog Work Group  Review and prioritize needs  User survey  Spatial Data Library functional criteria  Voyager pilot evaluation

Internal Data Repository  Evaluate portal scenarios  Voyager  Geoportal  Open Data  Implement preferred portal scenario

Metadata Collection & Workflows  Establish metadata collection workflows  Support direct publishing of ArcCatalog metadata records (LCOG proposal)  Develop web service metadata guidelines

ArcCatalog Desktop Geoportal Web App ArcGIS / Geoportal Customizations to Support Oregon Metadata Standard

Implement State Metadata Standard for…  Validation/Translation  Editing  Display Easy to Use Easy to Use  Only State Metadata Standard elements presented  Full FGDC standard support “under the hood”  Based on familiar technologies in use for metadata in Oregon  Easy deployment of Geoportal customization as a file package  Easy deployment of ArcCatalog customization as an ArcCatalog Add-In

User Interface  Improve with help of graphic designer  Leverage existing shared code  Incorporate faceted search  Framework categories  Collections  Keywords  ISO topic areas  Other?

External Site Integration  Facilitate data catalog sharing  Oregon Coastal Atlas  West Coast Ocean Data Portal  Others?  Promote Oregon Spatial Data Library content in Oregon Explorer

Oregon Explorer redesigned and launched in June 2015 www.oregonexplorer.info

Site Management & Support  Facilitate Oregon Spatial Data Library management and updates  User troubleshooting  Proactive metadata and data calls/updates  Support FIT Data Catalog Work Group

Where we could use your help: 1. Fill out the OSDL user survey during the next month 2. Share your ideas for needed improvements with any of the FIT Data Catalog Work Group members 3. Make sure all framework data and metadata is uploaded to the Oregon Spatial Data Library Contact me if you have any questions or comments: Janine.Salwasser@oregonstate.edu

http://spatialdata.oregonexplorer.info Issues  Good results buried deep when searching  Framework datasets and associated elements could be more identifiable  User interface out-dated  Lack of a clear pathway to publish and update spatial data  Collaboration with other data catalogs can be improved
