The Gospel. Then an argument broke out among them about which of them should be regarded as the greatest. He said to them, let the greatest among you be as the youngest, and the leader as the servant. For who is greater: the one seated at table or the one who serves? Is it not the one seated at table? I am among you as the one who serves.

Pope Francis I: Servant of the Servants of God. Wants a poorer church for the poor. Travelled in the minibus. Refused the flash clothes, “Carnival is over.” Went back to pay his hotel bill. Popped into a school with no fuss. Will wash the feet of young offenders. Phoned his newsagent to cancel the papers! Sits at the same level as others. Still living in a single bedroom.

So what? Good manners equals humility. Different jobs but equal dignity. What you do matters as much as what you say. Live simply. Be generous. Care for the poor and damaged. Care for our environment.
