Bronze Age A period in a civilization's development when the most advanced metalworking has developed the techniques of smelting copper from natural outcroppings and allows it to cast bronze. circumambulation The act of walking around something in a circle, especially for a ritual purpose. cornice The topmost architectural element of a building, projecting forward from the main walls, originally used as a means of directing rainwater away from the building's walls. Dance in Cambodia Dance in Cambodia consists of three main categories: classical dance of the royal court used for invocation, entertainment and to pay homage, folk dance which portrays cultural traditions, and social dances performed in social gatherings. dravida The main architectural style in South India. dynasty A series of rulers or dynasts from one family. fresco In painting, the technique of applying water-based pigment to wet or fresh lime mortar or plaster. gamelan A genre of music of Indonesian origin typically featuring metallophones, xylophones, drums, gongs and a bamboo flute (called a siuling). 14 gandhara Gandhāra is noted for the distinctive Gandhāra style of Buddhist art, which developed out of a merger of Greek, Syrian, Persian, and Indian artistic influence. Gandharan Buddhist sculpture displays Greek artistic influence, and it has been suggested that the concept of the "man-god" was essentially inspired by Greek mythological culture. Indic Pertaining to India or its people or culture; Indian. jataka tales (Sanskrit ज ) A voluminous body of folklore-like literature native to India and concerning the previous births (jāti) of the Buddha. lapis lazuli A relatively rare intensely blue semi-precious stone. mantra A phrase repeated to assist concentration during meditation. mathura The art of Mathura tends to be based on a strong Indian tradition, exemplified by the anthropomorphic representation of divinities such as the Yaksas, although in a style rather archaic compared to the later representations of the Buddha. The Mathuran school contributed clothes covering the left shoulder of thin muslin, the wheel on the palm, the lotus seat, etc. Mon A people living primarily in Myanmar (also known as Burma) and Thailand; one of the earliest peoples to reside in Southeast Asia, and responsible for the spread of Buddhism in Burma and Thailand. murtis A murti typically refers to an image that expresses a divine spirit. pantheon all the gods of a particular people or religion, considered as a group pilaster A rectangular column that projects partially from the wall to which it is attached; it gives the appearance of a support, but is only for decoration. relic A part of the body of a saint, or an ancient religious object, kept for veneration. Sanskrit A classical language of India ("Indian Latin"), a liturgical language of Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, Jainism, and one of the 23 official languages of India. 15 sikhara A Sanskrit word translating literally to "mountain peak", referring to the rising tower in the Hindu temple architecture of North India. silat The art of silat was created and firstly developed in the islands of Java and Sumatra. It is an art for survival and practiced throughout Indonesian archipelago. Centuries of tribal wars in Indonesian history had shaped silat as it was used by the ancient warriors of Indonesia. Silat was used to determine the rank and position in old Indonesian kingdoms. steatite Also known as soapstone, it contains a large amount of the mineral talc, and is easily malleable. stucco a plaster that is used to coat interior or exterior walls, or used for moldings stupa A dome-shaped Buddhist monument, used to house Buddhist relics. style the visual appearance of a work of art that relates it to other works by the same artist or from the same period, training, location, "school", art movement or archaeological culture sunken relief a type of sculpture largely restricted to the art of Ancient Egypt, in which the image is made by cutting the sculpture itself into a flat surface tempera A medium used to bind pigments in painting, as well as the associated artistic techniques. Upanishad An authorless Hindu religious and philosophical text considered to be an early source of the religion, found mostly as the concluding part of the Brahmanas and in the Aranyakas. vatadage A decorative circular frontispiece near the entrance of a Sri Lankan stupa. 16 Vedic Period The Vedic period (or Vedic age) was a period in Indian history during which the Vedas, the oldest scriptures of Hinduism, were composed. The time span of the period is uncertain, though is thought to span from 1700 BCE to about 500 BCE. Vishwakarma A group that is sometimes referred to as a caste and which comprises five sub-groups (carpenters, blacksmiths, bell metalworkers, goldsmiths, and stonemasons) who describe themselves as descendants of the Hindu god by the same name. wayang An Indonesian puppet.
