Writing Prompt Describe things that are spiral shaped, cylinder shaped, and round. Write in COMPLETE sentences! At least 5 sentences! Correct Heading Correct Capitalization & Punctuation.
2
Warm-Up Name and describe/draw the three different body shapes for bacteria. List one way that bacteria can be good and one way that it can be bad.
3
Warm-Up What Kingdom do Bacteria belong to? Do Bacteria have a nucleus? Are they single- celled or multicellular organisms? What are the names of the three different body shapes of Bacteria? How are Bacteria classified? How would you classify a bacteria shaped like the figure below?
4
Warm-Up If I were to look at a sample of pond water under a microscope, tell me what you might see. – What type of organisms may be moving around in the pond water? – How do these organisms move around in the water? What structures do they use?
5
Writing Prompt Discuss all you know about Bacteria. Include in your writing… – What kingdom bacteria belong to? – Are they single- or multi- celled? – Do they have a nucleus? – How are they classified? – What are the three different body shapes & names? At Least 5 COMPLETE sentences. Number your sentences!!!
6
Writing Prompt Explain the differences between bacteria and protists. In your writing discuss things such as – Which kingdom each belong to – How are each of them classified – What do they look like – What are their important features Remember your writing should be in paragraph form and contain at least 5 sentences. (This prompt should probably have more.)
7
BACTERIA
8
Belong to Moneran Kingdom Single-celled organisms Prokaryotic – no nucleus Classified by body shapes
9
S pirilla Spiral or corkscrew shaped
11
Baci ll us Rod shaped
13
C o ccus Sphere shaped
16
Viruses Tiny particles Much smaller than bacteria Show none of the expected signs of life However, they do reproduce Considered to by nonliving until infect cells of a host and reproduce within those cells Responsible for causing many diseases (AIDS, colds, and the flu)
17
Protists
18
Belong to the Kingdom Protista Single-celled or multi-celled organisms that live in all moist environments Eukaryotic – have a nucleus Vary in the way they get their food & the way they move – Locomotion = movement Examples: – Paramecium – Euglena – Amoeba
19
Paramecium Protist with cilia – Cilia: tiny hair-like structures Move by beating cilia – Act as tiny oars to help the protist move through its watery environment Cilia also help capture food – Directing it toward a groove that functions like a mouth
20
50-350 um in length
21
Euglena Protist with Flagella – Flagella: long whip-like structure Can have one or more flagella to help them move
22
Euglena (continued) Unique! Has characteristics of a plant and an animal – Contains chloroplasts that photosynthesize: plant – Can consume other organisms as well: animal
24
Amoeba Protists with Pseudopods – Pseudopods: finger-like structures they project forward (false foot) Move by extending their bodies forward & then pulling the rest of their bodies forward as well Pseudopods also used to trap food
26
Study Guide Cells Organelles Cell Membrane Diffusion Osmosis Cytoplasm Nucleus Vacuole Chloroplasts Mitochondria Cell Wall Plant Cells Vs. Animal Cells Bacteria Spirilla Bacillus Coccus Protists Paramecium Cilia Euglena Flagella Amoeba Pseudopods
27
Bell Ringer – Nov. 9, 2012 What kingdom do protists belong to? How are Protists classified? What are the 3 types of Protists that we discussed? For each one, list how it moves/gets its food.
