4 Functions of a manager Managers have four functions that they use on a daily basis. These functions include planning, leading, organizing, and controlling. Todays lesson will give you a better understanding of the management functions.

Planning The planning function of management is the function that maps out how a particular goal will be accomplished. Managers often set S.M.A.R.T. goals (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, timely ) goals.

Leading This function of management involves motivating, communicating, guiding, and encouraging. Running an organization can be difficult and require proper leadership.

Organizing The organizing function of management deals with the daily functions of a company. This includes assigning tasks to specific employees, figuring out the daily activities and the necessary steps that must be taken to complete them.

Controlling The controlling function of management is useful for ensuring all other functions of the organization are in place and are operating successfully. The controlling process often leads to the identification of situations and problems that need to be addressed by creating new performance standards.

Scenario activity You now have the opportunity to decide which function of management is appropriate for each situation. The worksheet consists of four scenarios that require you to use your higher order thinking skills and determine the function that is being used.
