3 Liquid Pipeline Case Study 3 The Williston Basin has emerged as one of the most important sources of new oil production in the United States. In Canada, the oil fields from this basin are located in southern Alberta and Saskatchewan, and are rapidly becoming a source of crude oil that adds to the northern oil sands supply. Alberta’s largest Williston Basin producer wants to make available its crude oil to the market in Eastern Canada and has chosen to transport its oil through pipelines as the rail option has become too expensive to continue on a go forward basis. Your Pipeline Company has been engaged in a project for a new pipeline that will transport crude oil from Bain, AB to Burstall, SK (approx. 200km), where it will connect to a major pipeline. The pipeline should have an initial capacity of 110,000 barrels a day, able to expand to 250,000 barrels a day in a future phase, and the target in-service date is the end of October 2017.
