Who turned the lights out? We are in an age of technology We are dependent on that technology. We have been assimilated. If you don’t think so - try taking your daughters cell phone from her and watch what happens. We are so dependent on technology we are now backing up our data systems with data systems. Our dependencies are backed up to other dependencies.

…chances are they are actually texting each other.

So…today we need to think about life without technology.

Because when things go wrong… Houses get destroyed Your house can be threatened Regional threat Regional destruction Job location destroyed Technology destroyed

The scary part… Aside from destruction… No water No electricity No phone service...WHAT!!!

First things first! If your family is safe you will go back to work. If you are safe and healthy you are an asset to your organization. If you are prepared you are a REAL asset to your organization.

Easy planning mantra Who to call Where to go Who does what and when

Family Preparedness 1. Play the “What if game” 2. Establish where to go if you can’t go home 1. Stay at school 2. Rally location at a neighbor or family member 3. Where to meet / out of town 3. Write it down in a plan 4. What will you need - Go Bag – prepare them 5. Don’t forget the dog and his needs Some Counties in Florida set up special shelters for Fire and Police families only during a Hurricane.

Ask yourself- how valuable are you to the organization? What tools do you need to to your job. How many of tools are electronic or stored data? Does your company have a Business Continuity Plan? Are you familiar with it? In the case of a Business Disruption…Do you know: Where to go? Who to call? Who does what and when?

Introducing the Go Bag Officers in the military sometimes kept bags on the back of their office door. These bags contained: Forms Phone Lists Critical Plans Paper and pens …tools they needed to do their job. Military Soldiers have a bag staged with everything they need to survive in the field.

Concept… My Business Go Bag What’s in it? Retired Cell Phone w/ power cord Retired laptop (maintain updates) w/ power cord Flash drive with cell phone back-up Paper copies of critical forms, plans, references Phone Lists Vendor Lists Client Lists Business Continuity Plan Flash drive with all documents listed above. 27 Your Secret You have in your possession… shhh... paper!

Disclaimer No documents should be backed-up nor taken off campus without the express permission of your supervisor. All “Sensitive” document rules and handling requirements apply.

Your Key The key is to be able to stand-up critical functions and communicate to clients, vendors and the like. Expect to have to function 24 to 72 hours (maybe longer) without systems. Have the tools to get things stated.

Now let’s just ponder this… …I think my assets might just be seeing some shade.
