Todays reference magnet was built as the proto-type for the main ring bending magnets, original measurements on the proto-type concluded that for the series: “Enlargement of the gap width by 40 mm and of the block width by 60 mm. By doing so a 40 mm wider zone of highly uniform field is obtained in all four gaps, giving rise to an insignificant increase of cost and to an increase of only a few percent of required excitation voltage”. Magnets for the PSBooster upgrade PSB Reference Magnet – Keeping the BHZ REF as today New coils to be purchased ~ 320 kCHF Installation of new coils In-situ with special tooling ~ 50 kCHF & 8 weeks In TE/MSC workshop, transport to workshop ~100 kCHF? (EN/HE to complete estimate for rail system) & 8+? = ?? weeks? EN/HE propose to complete installation of rail system before LS2. A true measurement of the magnet can only take place once the new MPS is ready or an alternative supply can be found, the measurement would take several weeks to perform. Calibration factors would need to be applied to the measurement – this is not a practical solution! The current BHZ REF will never be a true reference! Commissioning at 2.0 GeV will be time consuming, and the full capabilities of the new B-train system might not be fully exploited hampering future machine developments. A. Magnets for the PSBooster upgrade PSB Reference Magnet – Using one of the spares Location: Exchange with the existing BHZ REF in the BCER Transport in and out of building ‘rail system’ ~100 kCHF (EN/HE to complete estimate for rail system) + ? Weeks. EN/HE propose to complete installation of rail system before LS2. Cabling from new building to BCER – already included in TE/EPC budget? New Location (ideally new building) Old REF stays as ‘museum piece’ – no need for the installation of rails system. Cabling from BCER to new building - already included in TE/EPC budget? Copper demin water needs to be brought to new building, ??? kCHF A. Newborough 16 th October 2014

Magnets for the PSBooster upgrade PSB Reference Magnet – Using a spare as BHZ REF Spare policy: Only one spare will exist for 33 magnet (32 ring + Ref), the yoke is common for the two specials BHZ INJ & EXT and 1 set of spare coils exist. If the wrong magnet fails downtime of up to one month could be expected (as today). Only one magnet has been exchanged in the lifetime of the booster – not because of failure! One of the spares is currently being transformed into a BHZ INJ and is planned to be installed for the connection of LINAC 4 – the only spare will then be a BHZ INJ. Option to build new spare ‘normal’ – matching the steel, time dependant behaviour could be difficult. Option to build new BHZ INJ and EXT spare magnets – why BHZ INJ & EXT? A. Newborough 16 th October 2014

Magnets for the PSBooster upgrade RING 1RING 2 “At 1.4 GeV when the TRIM1+4 is applied a difference is observed in the horizontal orbit at periods 15 & 16, ~ 8 mm compared to `3.5 mm for rings 2 & 3.” – B. Mikulec PSB Reference Magnet – why new BHZ INJ & EXT? A. Newborough 16 th October 2014

Magnets for the PSBooster upgrade Based on 2 magnets (Eventually providing a dedicated spare for each type, ‘Normal’, ‘INJ’ & ‘EXT’.) Yoke production ~ 150 kCHF per magnet = 300 kCHF Coil production ~ 40 kCHF per gap = 320 kCHF Engineering costs & Assembly ~ 100 kCHF Total ~ 720 kCHF Budget: LIU Coils for the BHZ REF – 320 kCHF New consolidation request (2014) – 320 kCHF To be funded = 80 kCHF Spares magnet available for each type + Same BHZ REF as machine for 80 kCHF! Although ideally the magnets should be ready for LS2 there would be no reason the machine could not continue to operate with the existing magnets if delays occur. PSB Reference Magnet – Cost of new BHZ INJ & EXT? A. Newborough 16 th October 2014
17
Magnets for the PSBooster upgrade PSB Reference Magnet – Conclusion Considering the recent discovery that the PSB BHZ REF magnet is not identical to the machine magnets TE/MSC recommend the following actions: The BHZ REF magnet is exchanged for one of the spare magnets Two new Injection and Extraction magnets are built to provide a spare unit for each of the types (they do not behave identically to the ring magnets) To urgently follow up the possibility of keeping magnet where it is or to find an alternative location. To follow…… A. Newborough 16 th October 2014

Magnets for the PSBooster upgrade To follow….. A. Newborough 16 th October 2014 Side plates to reduce saturation – on all magnets or only ‘BHZ Normal’ or not at all? Requirements for the Q-trims (w.r.t. side plates or not) Requirements for the BHZ INJ EXT – trims – measurement to be completed. Static magnetic models may not be good enough to predict dynamic behaviour and more measurements are required!
