Lesson Objective  To effectively write a paragraph using P.E.E.  To understand how to structure an effective answer.

Create an Acrostic poem GHOSTGHOST

Using quotes  When you write English essays, it is important that you use examples from the text to back up your points. We use P.E.E.  When you write paragraphs, try to think of them as a hamburger. The best, most important bit, is the meat – the evidence! POINT EVIDENCE EXPLANATION

P.E.E Paragraphs  Point – make a statement that answers the question you are being asked.  Evidence – Use a quote from the novel – this is ANYTHING that is taken from the novel. Try starting with ‘We know this because…’ or ‘For example, (the character) says…’  Explanation – Explain why the quote you’ve used helps you answer the question/proves your point. Try starting with ‘This shows that…’

For example… Penelope Lively creates a feeling of mystery by having Tim bark at things that no one else can see. For example, James describes how ‘Tim was pacing round and round the floor with the hairs along his spine lifted in a dark ridge’. This shows that there is a presence in the room that only Tim can feel.

Using quotes  When using quotes, try to integrate your examples into your sentence.  GOOD: The dog ‘barked loudly’, which scared Pete.  BAD: The dog was barking loudly. ‘It barked loudly’. Pete was scared.

Writing P.E.E. Paragraphs  Using page 65/40, write a P.E.E. paragraph answering the following question: How does Penelope Lively show that James is feeling frustrated by the ghost? POINT EVIDENCE EXPLANATION POINT: Penelope Lively shows James is frustrated by…

Writing P.E.E. Paragraphs  Using page 65, write a P.E.E. paragraph answering the following question: How does Penelope Lively show that James is feeling frustrated by the ghost? POINT EVIDENCE EXPLANATION EVIDENCE: We know this because she write… or For example, James says…

Writing P.E.E. Paragraphs  Using page 65, write a P.E.E. paragraph answering the following question: How does Penelope Lively show that James is feeling frustrated by the ghost? POINT EVIDENCE EXPLANATION EXPLANATION: This shows that…

 Let’s read Chapter 4 (up to pg 74).

Questions to Consider  What kind of ghost is haunting James?  Why do you think the ghost only makes itself known to James?

TASK  Turn to page 70- 71/44.  Write a P.E.E paragraph that answers the following question: What type of ghost is Thomas Kempe? P : Thomas Kempe is a… E: We know this because James reads that… E: This shows that…

For example…  Thomas Kempe is a poltergeist.  We know this because James reads that ‘a poltergeist, it appeared, was a particularly riotous kind of ghost’. He also reads that they ‘ do not display [them]selves in the conventional way but confine [themselves] to making a great deal of noise, and throwing things’.  This shows that the ghost is a poltergeist because James has seen the ghost slam doors, throw things at him, and generally be very noisy and obnoxious.

 Volunteers to share?  What did each volunteer do well?  What could each volunteer improve on?

Plenary  Write another acrostic poem, this time using P O L T E R G E I S T
