Julie Graber Jaymie Randel ICC: Transforming Schools into the 21 st Century “Shift Control” Implementation Session #2

Today participants will … … challenge their current practices for making decisions regarding teaching and learning … understand how TPCK & the Activity Types can help teachers move from Technology Literacy Uses and/or Adapting Uses to Transforming Uses … understand how to use the ITSE Essential Conditions to update the district technology plan for effectively leveraging technology for learning

At your table, brainstorm a list of at least five things you remember about the TPCK Framework, the 5 Step Alignment Planning Process & the Activity Types.

Watch the following 2 clips. The first is a Kaplan University commercial & the second is Punya Mishra’s response to the commercial.

Discuss at your table. What point(s) do you think Punya Mishra was trying to make in the second video?

“It seems to me that as long as we keep thinking of technologies as merely supporting existing pedagogies, we will not be able to enjoy their true benefit and these technologies will not be able to live up to their true potential.” Punya Mishra haskayne.ucalgary.ca/its/smartboard http://www.foxbusiness.com/images/stories/Young%20Student%20on%20Laptop%20276.jpg

Event vs. Process

Team Think… Study each category of use, Literacy, Adapting, and Transforming. Which category is represented in this example? Be prepared to explain.

Team Think… Study the Characteristics of Effective Instruction (START) (Pink Sheet in Binder) and compare the CEI with Literacy, Adapting, and Transforming Uses. How are they similar and different?

Connections to the ICC ECS & CEI  Form job a-like groups (science teachers, other teachers, curriculum coordinators, technology coordinators, teacher librarians, principals and superintendents.  Brainstorm a list of everything you remember about the Edutopia classroom.  Determine what category of technology use is demonstrated in the clip.

Connections to the ICC ECS & CEI  Discuss what you learned from doing the assignment. Each job a-like group will share out their learning.  Read blogs from the superintendents.

Team Think… How could your team use the Technology and Learning Spectrum to do a needs assessment with staff members for the purpose of determining professional development needs?

First: we will watch a few minutes of a presentation from 2009 ISTE (NECC) conference. Second: each person will review/revise their answers to their article assignment. Third: groups of 3 will share their responses to the article assignment.

Explain the main point of the quote. And how you feel about the quote; that is, do you agree or disagree and why. Explain how similar or different the TPCK or technocentrically approach is compared to your district. Explain what would need to change with your district’s approach, if applicable.

TPACK..Directions 1)Access your pink Characteristic of Effective Instruction handout. Each table will be assigned a different CEI. 2) Individually read the 6 th grade U.S History ~ Civil War example unit. (Blue) Filter the reading through the lens of CEI. 3)As a group we will discuss the Moving from Texy to TPACK form. (Green) Access the Shift Control Wiki for the S.S. Act. Types http://aea267shiftcontrol.wikispaces.com

TPACK…Processing Questions 1.What did you notice about the table titles? 2.How are these activity types similar to what you or other teachers have used before? 3.How are these activity types similar to what your teachers are learning about in ICC, ESC, Literacy Excellence, ELI, etc.?

Invent a Machine … Find the Invent a Machine unit on the Shift Control Wiki http://aea267shiftcontrol.wikispaces.com

Invent a Machine … Directions 1.As a table group, read through the Instructional Procedures through Concluding Activities sections. 2.While reading each paragraph, underline what the students are being asked to do (not what the teacher does). 3.Using the underlined items, find the corresponding activity type using the science learning activity types document. Access the Science Activity Types document from the Shift Control Wiki. 4. Record the activity types (Step 3) and the possible technologies (Step 5) on the Moving from Texy to TPACK form. (Green)

Invent a Machine … Processing Questions What differences did you notice about the table titles between the Social Studies and the Science activity types? What similarities did you notice about the table titles between the Social Studies and the Science activity types?

Superintendent, BOE, Parents, & Community Principals Teachers Students AEA 267’s Approach… How might the Activity Types help teach students the ICC 21 st Century Technology Literacy Skills? Technology & Curriculum Coordinators & Teacher Librarians

Teachers Students AEA 267 ‘s Approach… If teachers used the TPCK Framework, 5-Step Planning Process, and Activity Types how might these help them implement the ICC ECS and CEI?

How might the Activity Types help teachers move from Literacy to Adapting to Transforming Uses?

Principals Teachers Students AEA 267 ‘s Approach… Technology & Curriculum Coordinators & Teacher Librarians What are the implications for Principals, Technology and Curriculum Coordinators, and Teacher Librarians?

Superintendent, BOE, Parents, & Community Principals Teachers Students AEA 267’s Approach… Challenge current practices for making decisions regarding teaching and learning Technology & Curriculum Coordinators & Teacher Librarians

Technology related issues/problems that are present in your district. List complete thoughts. Brainstorm… Examples Difficulty accessing quality resources Lack of technology skills

Directions 1)Locate and read the purple Essential Conditions handout in the resource section of your binder. 2) Join other participants with the same color/shape dot that is on your name tag. 3)Discuss the Conditions and be prepared to share the following with another group: Rank the Conditions in terms of importance (1-13) Record your rationale for the first five Conditions

Directions 4)Join your assigned group. 5) Select a reporter. 6) Share your results. 7) Discuss possible reasons for the differences. 8)The reporter from each paired group will provide a summary to the large group.

Directions 9) At your tables, compare the Essential Conditions to the group’s original list of technology related issues/problems. What emerges from your comparison?

Directions 10) In school teams, use the Essential Conditions Rubric to evaluate your district’s current technology plan. For now focus on Student-Centered Teaching Read the description for each level of the rubric. Determine the level that best describes your district. Draft actions to take in the template provided.

If the Shift Control Leadership team does not take action on behalf of the LEA, then who will? The idea is to “shift control” from thinking some external action needs to first happen so that actions at the LEA level can then take place.
